LAKE TAHOE MOUNTAIN RESORT REPORT

MOUNTAIN RESORT REPORT©

DATE: SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2018

FROM: CURTIS FONG – “THE GUY FROM TAHOE”

GOOD MORNING LAKE TAHOE SKIERS & RIDERS… IF YOU’RE VISITING, WELCOME TO LAKE TAHOE!

IT’S SUNDAY FUNDAY OF PRESIDENTS WEEKEND AND SNOW SHOWERS ARE IN THE FORECAST FOR THIS AFTERNOON… GET OUT EARLY… STRONG GUSTY WINDS ARE AFFECT THE OPERATION OF UPPER MOUNTAIN LIFTS… SQUAW, ALPINE, MT ROSE, MAMMOTH & HEAVENLY HAVE LIFTS CLOSED AND WIND HOLDS. CALL AHEAD! CONTINUE TO DO YOUR SNOW DANCE AND PRAY FOR SNOW… 6-10” POSSIBLE BY MONDAY WITH COLD TEMPS RETURNING…

TODAY’S WEATHER: Partly Cloudy with a chance of Showers in the morning, then Snow Showers likely in the afternoon. Snow accumulation up to 2 inches. Highs: 35F to 45F. Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. Ridge Gusts up to 110 mph decreasing to 90 mph in the afternoon.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT:

SNOW WILL CREATE SLICK DRIVING CONDITIONS MONDAY…

A strong fast moving cold front will move through the region during the day today with slick driving conditions likely in the Sierra and possible throughout the rest of the region.

In the Sierra snow accumulations of a few inches at all elevations with up to 5-8 inches along the higher passes will bring back winter driving conditions to the Sierra. You should anticipate travel restrictions and delays today and tonight in the Sierra.

In western Nevada, snow showers with light accumulations of snow around 0.5-1.0″ of snow are possible with up to 2 inches in some foothill locations.

A flash freeze will also be possible today where a small amount of snow falls, melts as it hits warmer ground surfaces, and then refreezes when the temperatures fall. The most likely areas for flash freeze will be in the lower valleys in western and west- central Nevada where the temperatures are expected to rise to the mid 40s today before cold front arrives. Keep in mind, it only takes 0.01 of precipitation flash freezing to the road to make for hazardous driving conditions, and it is nearly impossible to say exactly where this might happen.

So the best advice is, if you see precipitation falling or wet/snowy roads today be extra cautious since they could be even slipperier than usual.

WHAT TO WEAR: Dress, in layers with your or Jacket or Shell. Take good gloves, a hat or beanie, and wear a Helmet for Safety. Also wear Good (100% UV) Sunglasses or Goggles. Don’t forget to Stay Hydrated at altitude!

SURFACE CONDITIONS: Surface Conditions are Machine Groomed and Skier-Rider Packed Snow… Some areas of Firm Packed Snow with Fresh Machine Made Snow on select areas at resort that make snow… Watch for marked & unmarked obstacles…

SAFETY MESSAGE: Stay on designated Opened Trails only. Early Season Conditions Exist… Keep an eye out for marked and unmarked obstacles. Slow Down and observe safety signs on trails with high concentration of skiers and riders… Know the Code! Always stay in control. Be able to avoid objects and people in your Path! Please stop to side of the run where it is safe and always check uphill for skiers and riders before restarting down hill.

IF YOU VENTURE IN TO THE BACK COUNTRY “KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!” For more info: http://sierraavalanchecenter.org – See Backcountry Avalanche Watch posted at bottom of this report.
